Text-To-Speech

Enable Text-to-Speech in Anki Pro to enhance your learning with audio feedback, ideal for auditory learners

Updated over a month ago

The Text-to-Speech (TTS) feature lets you listen to the text or words on your cards. You can pick different languages for each side of the card or even choose only specific parts of the card! We offer a bunch of languages, all professionally auto-generated. Let’s see how you can set up our Text-to-speech perfectly for you.

How to enable Text-to-Speech

AnkiPro app offers two TTS modes:

  • reading everything from your card

  • reading only specific parts of text selected by you

Pronounce the whole card

To enable this option, please open your deck’s Settings, go to Text-to-speech and enable Whole card pronunciation option.

Pronounce certain parts of the card

You can select only necessary word/phrase directly when editing a card.

For this just tap the TTS button and select the text you need to be pronounced. The app will add a mask and you will see a small Speaker icon in front of this selection. Using this method you can add multiple selections to your card.

To delete a TTS mask, just select the text and tap the TTS icon once again.

!kindly note that you cannot select text that is already highlighted with Cloze!

Your text formatting will also be erased to default.

How to learn with Text-to-speech

When in Learning mode, you will see that the text you chose for TTS is now highlighted in grey. This will help you determine with parts are to be pronounced. If you tap the Speaker button, the app will pronounce your selection as many times as you want. If you have multiple fields, it will pronounce them one by one in order.

Adjusting Text-to-speech settings

If you go back to your Deck’s Text-to-speech settings, you can choose if you want the sound to be played automatically as well as select target languages for each side of your card.
