Offline Learning is a really indispensable feature when you canât have access to the Internet but still need to study your anki cards. It lets you download your important decks in advance, and then, when youâre commuting to uni and thereâs no connection, study them right before your exam!
Now, let's see how it works so you can get the best experience with this feature.
How do you enable Offline mode for your deck?
Simple! Just go to the necessary deck's Settings and tap the Offline Learning option. Here, you'll see a toggle that will allow you to switch your Offline Learning on and off.
The app will automatically convert to Offline Learning once there's no Internet connection. In Offline mode, only your pre-downloaded cards are available. Now youâre ready to study.
Keep in mind that if you donât have any decks saved, youâll need to pre-download them before boarding your plane while you still have Internet!
After that, you won't have to worry about keeping your downloaded cards up to date! AnkiPro will automatically check for any new, deleted or edited cards every time you open it while online, so itâs easier for you to study on the go later.
How do you check if the cards are successfully downloaded?
When previewing your deck, you will see a message indicating that your deck was successfully downloaded. Now you can study them on the train on your way to uni!
And this works with sub-decks, too - all your cards will be available once you download the main deck.
Additional settings
If you go to your app's general Settings, you will see a new Offline settings feature. Let's see what it offers:
Download only on Wi-Fi - choose if you want to download your files over both Wi-Fi and Mobile Data (default) or use only your Wi-Fi connection
Clear Cache - in case you need to free up space or no longer need to use the Offline mode for your studies
What happens to your progress when you're offline?
Even though you are offline, you can study your cards all the same, so donât worry about your progress!
Once you studied all available cards, you'll see a prompt to connect to the Internet to sync your study progress. Congrats, you've studied all your offline cards!
Things to note
While itâs not possible to download sub-decks for Offline use separately, you can still study them as a part of a main deck!
With current limitations, only 6 decks can be downloaded for offline studies, with a maximum of 200 cards each.
Only decks with Spaced Repetition algorithms can take advantage of the Offline mode. If you're studying with General algorithm, you'll see a message that Offline learning is not available for this deck.
You cannot add new cards or edit existing ones when in Offline mode
Text-to-speech works just as usual!
Now you can make the most of your study time, no matter where you are!
